Mnoho dětí s autismem dokáže lépe vnímat rytmus a melodii, než mluvené slovo. Děti se tak dokáží snáze uvolnit, komunikovat s okolím, navázat při aktivitě kontakt s ostatními. U některých dětí je při této aktivitě využíván vizuální doprovod - malované písničky, tématické obrázky. Během muzikoterapie se děti zapojují do činnosti zpěvem, hrou s tělem nebo na různé hudební a perkusní nástroje.
Lektor sám střídá hru na různé hudební nástroje a aktivity doprovází zpěvem doplněným např. pohybovými aktivitami či relaxací. Využíváno je také poslechu hudby.
Cílem je vytvořit podnětné prostředí pro koncentraci a vnímání dětí s autismem, navodit příjemnou atmosféru a uvolnění dětí.
Aktivitu vede zkušený lektor za pomoci svého asistenta. Zpočátku navštěvují děti tuto aktivitu s rodičem či asistentem. Naše zkušenost je však taková, že po několika lekcích jsou děti schopny muzikoterapii absolvovat samy.
Tato aktivita je dětmi velmi oblíbena.
