Montessori metoda je založena na principu svobodné volby smysluplné činnosti a umožňuje každému dítěti vyvíjet se dle jeho vlastního individuálního tempa, což je pro rozvoj dítěte s autismem zásadní. Pro děti s autismem je velmi důležité připravené prostředí. Pro rozvoj těchto dětí využíváme v Auticentru místnost, která je uzpůsobena pro práci s Montessori pomůckami, a v níž dítě dle svých potřeb pracuje individuálně nebo v malé skupince dětí.
Pod vedením zkušeného lektora, který se dlouhodobě věnuje práci s dětmi s autismem, si děti samy volí, jaké činnosti se budou věnovat. Ze škály propracovaných pomůcek Montessori, které jsou dětem postupně představovány, si vybírají ty, které je zajímají.
Lektor se spoléhá na své pečlivé pozorování dětí, aby správně určil, které nové činnosti a pomůcky mají být ukázány každému jednotlivému dítěti. Cílem je povzbuzovat aktivní, samostatně řízené učení se a udržovat rovnováhu zvládnutí dané aktivity jednotlivým dítětem.
